- Establish key looks and lighting for recurring locations, then simplify them to “plug-and-play” styles which can be applied efficiently to subsequent shots by other artists.
- Identify potential issues early and work with colleagues in other departments to find creative solutions.
- Utilize node-based compositing with Nuke as well as Pantheon proprietary tools, to add volumetric lighting to 2D animated characters, according to direction from Lighting Supervisor.
- Receive direction with a collaborative attitude, perform iterations and/ or present multiple options as needed to ensure each shot meets the level of quality and craft outlined by the Lighting Supervisor.
- Track hand-held camera motion, create shadows, tones, and reflections to match 2D animated characters into classical paintings and live-action plates.
- Develop look of the film, create documentation and training materials so other compositors can replicate the look.
- Troubleshoot problems by researching and developing solutions to technical issues as they arise.
- Composite shots using Nuke and Pantheon to match volumetric lighting style of characters to backgrounds, creating shadows, reflections, and custom VFX.
- Compositing process and tools developed on the film have been featured in articles by Toon Boom, The Foundry, Movie Maker Magazine, Cartoon Brew, and more.
- Create traditional, hand drawn animation for pivotal shots in the film.
- Perform visual research and create benchmark shots to develop authentic distressed VHS tape look.
- Develop templates and tutorials to allow crew who are unfamiliar with compositing to successfully execute shots.
- 2D puppet layout for frogs with tweenable legs and other characters on Adult Swim show, “Teenage Euthanasia”.
- Lip-sync, traditional animation clean-up, and background clean-up for “City Island” pilot episodes for PBS Kids.
- Translate board/ animatic poses to the characters while staying on style for shows with very specific design rules.
- Design, animate, and composite hand-drawn/ 2D puppet hybrid animated characters into live-action footage.
- Designed and executed 40+ illustrations in two unique styles for the intro and ending sequences.
